Bio

I'm Director of Operations for the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust.  I joined the charity as a regional manager after 10 years of running a family bar and restaurant business in the Borders, so bring personal experience of the challenges small businesses face to my work with young entrepreneurs.

  • In many cases, with some that I meet, it can be very much a case of the “marmite” factor, where social media is something that is either loved or hated.

So, as social media grows and becomes an ever increasing part of everyday business considerations, what will the implications be for the micro to small businesses that are being started every day throughout Scotland?

  • I learn about the challenges that they face and the realities of the communities in which they operate.

A recent trip to Kirkwall in Orkney was a visit that raised a lot of questions in my mind, particularly about the crucial role of community in business success.

I have been a regular visitor to this beautiful island over the last four years and on each occasion make time to meet up with the ever growing band of young businessmen and women who are playing an increasing role in the developing business landscape.

  • I would like to start my first blog of 2012 with a quick quiz which has no prizes and no need for you to dash to your nearest search engine for the answer...

Question 1: Who was the first President of Uzbekistan?

Question 2: Who was your favourite school teacher?

I bet everyone at least has a score of 50%, but hands up out there how many of you had 100%.

So, what is the point of the quiz in relation to business in Scotland today? I will explain later.

  • In our millions we await each new series, so that we can cast our own ‘expert’ eyes over the ideas broadcast. Even better is the thought of the heated debate next day with colleagues and friends.

So how do we spot a winner in the business world, and what strategy should we use to find them? Is it an art or a science, and how does it compare, for example, to picking a winner on a visit to Hamilton Races?

To get a feel for this we can consider the following questions:

  • When I first joined the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust as a regional manager in the Scottish Borders, I had just sold my own bar and restaurant business. I took a leap of faith with an organisation I had heard good things about.

More than a decade on, and now working as the charity's Operations Manager, I have gained great insight into what the drivers and the challenges are for young people, as they consider business as an option at such an early stage in their lives.
