Police uncovered a cannabis plantation after being called to a flat fire, it was revealed today.

Officers responded to reports of a fire in the Hillington area of Glasgow but on arrival realised they had stumbled on a drugs factory.

About 100 plants were seized - with an estimated street value of £30,000 - from the Chirnside Road flat.

Police are investigating whether any plants were destroyed. No-one was hurt in the incident.

It is believed the fire, which was reported at about 6pm yesterday, was caused by an electrical fault.

Strathclyde Police said they were following a positive line of inquiry over who was responsible for the fire.

A police spokeswoman said: "The threat posed to the public remains and police would like to remind the public of the dangers posed by these cannabis cultivations in residential properties.

"They pose a potentially lethal fire risk in local communities and are a real danger to everyone."

The drugs find took place during Operation League, a national campaign led by Strathclyde Police to reduce cannabis cultivation.
