An atheist advertising campaign was launched across Britain yesterday, with the slogan: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

The adverts will appear on 800 buses across the country, in cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. The £140,000 campaign, which will run for four weeks, will also appear on the London underground and on two large LCD screens in Oxford Street.

The slogan was submitted by comedy writer Ariane Sherine in response to a number of evangelical Christian adverts which appeared last year. A fundraising campaign was launched with support from the British Humanist Association and atheist campaigner Professor Richard Dawkins.

Ms Sherine said: "You wait ages for an atheist bus, then 800 come along at once. I hope they'll brighten people's days and make them smile on their way to work. I am very glad that we live in a country where people have the freedom to believe in whatever they want."

Organisers initially aimed to raise £5500 but within four days a total of £100,000 had been collected through public and individual donations.

Tim Maguire, of the Humanist Society of Scotland, said: "It's the first time that a campaign has come about not by an advertising agency or marketing firm, but by a comedy writer. It's genuinely a popular campaign."
