I'm a Glaswegian but was brought up in Aberdeen, where I became a supporter of the Dons. Still am, despite everything. Studied history at Oxford, then a year at Newcastle learning (allegedly) how to be a journalist. Then the Scotsman for 12 years, then The Herald, latterly as editor. Received the Lord Provost of Glasgow’s Medal for “giving Glasgow a voice”. Retired in 2001 but in 2004 asked to write a weekly column. I've written books on the Church of Scotland, the Scottish Press, Scottish football and the Reformation.
