Rolls-Royce yesterday said it had won a £4bn order from fast-growing Gulf airline Emirates for engines for up to 120 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

The order is likely to be good news for Scotland's manufacturing sector and particularly for Rolls-Royce's 2200 staff at the company's plant at Inchinnan, Renfrewshire, which makes compressor blades and seals for a number of engines, including the Trent range.

The Trent XWB is the fourth version of the Trent family ordered by Emirates and will bring its Trent powered-fleet to potentially 175 aircraft.

The XWB - extra wide body - is designed in Derby, but Rolls has not said where work on the latest Emirates order will take place.

Yesterday's news comes on the heels of last week's announcement that International Lease Finance Corporation had ordered Trent XWB engines to power a fleet of 20 Airbus A350 XWBs.

Rolls' East Kilbride plant, which employs 1100 and is part of the company's engine aftercare division, could also benefit from the deal.
