Paolo Nutini will help bring in the New Year by performing in two different cities on one night, it was announced yesterday.

The Scottish singer will perform at the Hogmanay celebrations in both Glasgow and Edinburgh on December 31, becoming the first artist to do so.

Paisley-born Nutini, 21, will kick-start Edinburgh's concert in West Princes Street Gardens before heading west to headline in Glasgow city centre.

Council officials in both cities revealed the star's plans as they announced details of their end-of-year celebrations.

Information on Glasgow's winter plans was also released yesterday.

Winterfest Glasgow will get under way with the switch-on of the Christmas lights on November 16, while an outdoor ice rink will help transform George Square.

Other highlights at the end of that month include a traditional outdoor ceilidh as part of the St Andrew's Day celebrations.

Glasgow's Lord Provost Bob Winter said: "Winterfest Glasgow is bigger and better, and what better way to launch it than with the news that local boy Paolo Nutini will be wowing the crowds as we welcome in 2009?"

Tickets for the George Square party will be £15 and go on sale on November 8.

Further announcements about the Edinburgh line-up can be expected in early November, when prices will be announced and tickets will go on sale.
