The first Young Scottish Minority Ethnic Award ceremony took place at Holyrood last night, with nine groups or individuals commended for contributing to Scottish life.

The first Young Scottish Minority Ethnic Award ceremony took place at Holyrood last night, with nine groups or individuals commended for contributing to Scottish life.

Irfon Younis of organisers Oceanic Consulting said: "The whole point is to raise awareness and celebrated the achievements of our young people from ethnic minorities."

The arts award went to Knightswood Youth Theatre, a group of young asylum seekers, refugees and local Glaswegians who were described as "fantastic role models".

Other award-winners were Kashif Aziz; Ifrah Raza; Marcus Whyte; Mumta Singhal; Justyna Chmurzynska; Anas Sarwar; Leaders of the 8th Blackford Scout Group (community service); and Universal Football Club in Glasgow (Spirit of Scotland Award).
