Kitchen-fitting firm DM Design has been ordered to pay £90,000 after it bombarded homeowners with telephone calls, even though they had signed up with a service that bans unsolicited contact.

The Cumbernauld-based firm drew almost 2000 complaints to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) after consistently failing to check if individuals had opted out of receiving marketing calls.

Strathclyde Police have written to members of the Scottish Defence League (SDL) to tell them not to gather today in Pollokshields, in the south side of Glasgow, to mark the ninth anniversary of the death of Kriss Donald.

The 15-year-old was abducted on March 15, 2004, stabbed and set on fire. Faisal Mushtaq, Zeeshan Shahid and his brother Imran Shahid were sentenced to life in November 2006 after being found guilty of his murder.

The SDL had planned to hold a demonstration to mark the occasion, but it has been told it does not have the right to do so.

The team from Dundee University has been given £5 million to create the device, which will be swallowed by a patient and beam back images of their intestines.

Current scanning techniques for problems in the gut involve endoscopy, which is uncomfortable and requires a skilled technician, limiting the availability of treatment.

The funding is from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which is investing £47m in projects across the UK.
