Susanna Kallur, European hurdles champion indoors and out, is the first of a likely all-star Swedish line-up to be named for the Norwich Union International in Glasgow on January 26.
Unbeaten at the Kelvin Hall, she goes in the 60 metres hurdles in which she will meet Britain's fourth-placed world heptathlon medallist, Jessica Ennis. It could also mean a rematch against the woman who may have cost Kallur the world outdoor title this year.
The US has yet to name their team, but it may include world outdoor champion Michelle Perry. Kallur led the field until the eighth flight of the 100m hurdles final in Osaka. Perry then appeared to impede the Swede, who then finished fourth despite a lifetime best, but her team manager became aware too late to lodge a protest.
Immediately after Osaka, Kallur beat all three medallists in the Zurich Grand Prix, costing Perry a share of the $1m Golden League jackpot.
Also the Euro 100m hurdles champion, Kallur hopes next month's Scottish meeting will launch her to an Olympic place at least one better than in Japan. "Glasgow's the start of another big year for me," said Kallur. "I've had great success in the last year, and in particular in the last six years at Kelvin Hall. I look forward to holding on to my unbeaten run."
She spearheads a strong Swedish side for the match against Britain, the US, Germany, and a Commonwealth Select, and will be joined by Johan Wissman, the European 200m silver medallist, who set a national record in Glasgow last January (20.85 seconds).
Last year, King Carl XVI Gustav presented Kallur with the Jerringspriset, her country's most coveted sport prize, ahead of Carolina Kluft (Olympic, world, and European hep-tathlon champion), Christian Olsson (European and Olym-pic triple-jump gold medallist), Stefan Holm (Olympic high- jump champion), and Kjasa Bergqvist (world high jump champion). Each could be named in the team for Glasgow.
nSteph Twell, the European junior champion, will have an early test against senior opposition in the BUPA Great Edinburgh International Cross-country on January 12.
First to win two Euro junior titles, she is tipped as a successor to Paula Radcliffe. But at Holyrood she will face Gelete Burka and Vivian Cheruiyot, world gold and silver medallists respectively at 5000 metres.
