Let's talk our way out of the immigration taboo

I woke up yesterday morning to the sound of Julie Spence, chief constable of Cambridgeshire, talking sensibly and sensitively on the radio about the problems caused to her force by immigration. There was nothing racist or xenophobic in what she said. As I listened to her I was surprised because immigration has become a taboo subject for many politicians and other leading public figures.
