I'm quite easily put off by on-counter consultations – like many women are – because quite often they leave me feeling a bit deflated. First because my flaws have just been pointed out under the harsh glare of UV lighting and second because I often find the tone of the make up artist/counter woman a touch patronising. And I work in the industry, for heaven's sake, so I should feel more confident standing my ground or questioning their judgement.
But at Benefit I instantly warmed to the whole bunch. The experience was a treat. What it also did was remind me of the power of blush – and I mean that fabulously peachy-pink, coral-coloured shade that instantly makes you look more awake, more beautiful and more fresh-faced. They suggested Benefit's Coralista (£23.50; www.benefit.co.uk). I love it because with just a hint of shimmer, it makes me glow.
To confuse matters, there's a raft of these lovely blushers out this spring because this spectrum of shades suits so many complexions and looks seasonally fresh. I also love Bobbi Brown's Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks in Fresh Melon (£18; www.bobbibrown.co.uk) which, hurrah, now comes with a flip-top mirrored lid, making it much more user-friendly. The same multi-tasking formula remains and, just as an FYI for fans, there are some lovely new shades too.
I'm also besotted with Chanel's new Blush Horizon de Chanel (£46; www.houseoffraser.co.uk). The row after row of striped pinks and peaches – which even includes a white shade – looks a bit scary in the compact but, swirled together, they look fabulous, leaving a soft, multi-dimensional, glowing finish.
Sisley has also come up trumps this season with their L'Orchidee Highlighter Blush with white lily (£60; www.johnlewis.com). It's a luxe summer must-have that ticks all the boxes: a beautiful compact, a warm peachy-toned blush and a highlighter combined. It will look stunning with a tan.
Last but not least, Estee Lauder's Pure Colour Blush range is more wallet-friendly and features a Blushing Nude shade (£24; www.esteelauder.co.uk) which packs a subtle punch. Fantastic for that 'no make up' hint of colour.
