Perhaps the strain of having to be perfectly presented in eye-wateringly expensive kit during the tournament proved too much for the participants of the Ryder Cup.

Or maybe it was that the golfers, their wives and the invited elite enjoyed one too many shandies at the wrap party last night, and decided that maintaining the high sartorial standards was too much effort.

Either way, the outfits that emerged from the Gleneagles Hotel this morning (and the people in them) were decidedly more relaxed than the perfectly coordinated get-ups that we've been used to seeing on the course, with clubs swapped for puffy eyes and cups of coffee.

Representing the USA, Bubba Watson appeared in an Oakley T-shirt and over-sized shorts teamed with reflective sunglasses, while his wife Angie donned trainers with colourful laces and leisure-wear.

Patrick Reed wore a T-shirt bearing the words 'United we stand', a crucifix necklace and baseball cap while Justine, his wife, left the hotel in a spotty monochrome dress accessorised with an ornate printed handbag.

Determined not to be outdone by the Americans, Alex Salmond appeared in his own off-duty style. The First Minister teamed a Gleneagles cap with tartan trim with a navy Gleneagles branded jumper bearing the Ryder Cup emblem - just in case there were any queries to where his allegiances lay.
