Now these original Scots-Italian restaurants are being joined by a new wave of imports – led by Manchester-based chain Pesto and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

You might think the market is as saturated as an over-sauced osso bucco. Apparently not. The latest arriviste in town is Carluccio’s, the mid-market Italian cafe-restaurant-deli chain founded in 1989 by Antonio Carluccio and his then wife Priscilla Conran.
