The Corinthian

191 Ingram Street

Glasgow

What is it? This mammoth grade A-listed venue opened its doors in 1999 after a painstaking refurbishment by the G1 group. It is home to a nightclub, bars, meeting rooms, event spaces and even a casino. After another major refurbishment a couple of years back it is certainly one of the most opulent and well-designed venues in town.

Interesting fact Built in 1842 on the site of the Virginia Mansion, it is one of Glasgow's most elaborate and richly decorated buildings both internally and externally. It originally housed the Glasgow Ship Bank which was extended and embellished.

Verdict I have heard good and bad reports about The Corinthian over the years but that always happens in a venue of this size; it is very difficult to maintain a standard in every single area. My visit to the main bar area was fine, good service and a decent offering. While the decor and surroundings are of the standard you would find in London or New York, the rest of the offering is more typically of a Glasgow standard, which is maybe what the punters want.

Signature drink Good selection of spirits and the staff seemed well enough equipped to produce the cocktails from the list. I opted for a pint of premium lager which came in at £4.50

Price Wee bit on the steep side in places although there are plenty of offers. Pint of lager from £3.60 and a small white wine £3.90.

Food Good menu in the main bar with loads of private booths in the dining area. I had a Caesar salad which came in at £9.95 and was very good.

Children Allowed in some areas if eating up until around 8pm

Toilets Clean, tidy and designed to within an inch of their life.

Alfresco: A couple of little areas for a sneaky ciggie but no real outside seating.

Avoid if you fancy quick pint and a read of the paper after work.

Perfect for hanging around with the Glasgow glitterati.
