The Fox and Hounds

South Street

Houston

Renfrewshire

What is it: When the Wengal family started the Fox and Hounds in 1978 they wanted to create a quality pub and restaurant with fine Scottish foods, real ale and a warm welcome. The family still runs the establishment which has won numerous awards and now has its own brewery. The listed building itself dates back to 1779 and looks every part the classic village pub. The interior is typically traditional with the occasional piece of taxidermy, dark wood furniture and pub bric-a-brac. It is a big venue with two bars and the restaurant is upstairs.

Interesting fact: Some might say it's more famous for being Rangers manager Ally McCoist's favourite pub or hosting live acts including Paolo Nutini, Neil Diamond and Westlife, but it's the micro-brewery that's really putting it on the map. They began brewing in 1996 and have won prestigious awards such as Champion Bitter of Great Britain 2011 with Peter's Well Ale. It also holds two popular beer festivals, with the next one in August.

Verdict: I used to come here with my family for dinner when I was a kid and loved it, so I was quite apprehensive about returning in case it didn't live up to my memories. As soon as I stepped inside I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Everything was the same even down to the personalised Fox and Hounds carpet. This is the perfect village pub in terms of food, drink and service.

Signature drink: They offer 12 different beers but they are constantly updating their offering. I was told to try the light beer Killellan which was described as a refreshing ale with a floral, citrus, hop aroma and a lemon, zesty, elderflower taste. The finish is smooth, dry and thirst quenching. The Killellan was priced at a very reasonable £2.80.

Food: I had a sirloin steak with homemade chips which was delicious and, again, reasonable at £15.

Price: Great prices considering its popularity. Small wine £2.30 and a pint for around £2.80.

Children: Child-friendly with a lovely family atmosphere.

Toilets: Clean and all in order.

Alfresco: Beer garden/smokers' haven for those sunny days.

Avoid if: You prefer style bars.

Perfect for: Meeting up with family for a drink, then some good honest food, then possibly some more drinks ...
