THIS a funny wee flat.

It's in Newington, Edinburgh, and we bought it three years ago from a lovely old man who was packing up his life and moving to America. He was a jazz nut with hundreds of records and every time we viewed the flat there was jazz playing and scented candles lit and I thought: "Wow, this is so nice." That definitely informed our decision because basement flats aren't the brightest and we don't get phone reception here but in a lot of ways it's good.

The flat has lots of character. Friends say that when they come down the stairs to the flat it's like entering another universe. No walls are straight and none of the floors are even and there are loads of wee nooks and crannies.

There's a little courtyard, which is accessed from the bedroom and where we grow all sorts of things. One of the things I love about the lounge is the view of the garden. We built a window seat and have the table in front of it so we can sit and eat breakfast in the morning and watch the birds and the flowers growing in the courtyard. It's really special.

The flat is a bit of a tight squeeze with the two of us and a big dog. My partner, Thomas, and I often talk about having kids and what we would do in terms of space, but I think you just get on with it.

Thomas and I are both creative and we don't have a TV in the lounge - it's such a waste of time, there are so many other things you could be doing. Thomas is a big surfer and snowboarder who is always working on snowboards and surfboards so there is always paint in the lounge.

We've got a lovely big Chesterfield sofa where Luna, our German Shepherd, sleeps pretty much all the time. We've only just stopped paying for it, but we never get to sit on it. We're hunched on a couple of stools while Luna lounges.

We listen to music in here and a lot of wine is consumed: I have a lot of dinner parties. My friends love coming round because it is really cosy and we sit round that table until the wee hours. When everyone has gone home, it is so nice just to sit on the sofa with a glass of wine and cuddle up to Luna and listen to the radio. I think because I am so busy at the moment, I just want to sit in a dark room and zone out.

Moira's new collection of silver jewellery for Patience Jewellery is launched this month www.patiencejewellery.com

Green lady painting

This is the thing I'd save from a fire. It was given to me as a farewell gift by a very dear friend Katie who I shared a flat with when we studied at art college in Dundee. I always loved her paintings. This one reminds me of that four years at college when you are completely free, enjoy what you are doing and have good friends and, without sounding cheesy, are finding yourself as an artist. I studied jewellery-making. I loved Dundee, still do. Katie owns an organic cafe in Bristol now. Her first love was always cooking.

Hiking boots

I've had the same pair of boots since I was 16. I love hillwalking. It relaxes me. I've walked hundreds of miles in those boots and I can't bear to change them because there is nothing worse than breaking in new boots. We're so lucky to live in Scotland and have all these amazing hills so close by. We have a campervan which we escape in with Luna frequently and go walking.

Guitar

Thomas and I have been together 11 years. We met in first year of art school. He was doing graphic design. He gave me this guitar on my 21st birthday. It was a very special gift at the time. It is a Washburn which is the oldest brand of guitar. It's beautiful and is inlaid with mother of pearl which is quite appropriate to me as a jeweller. I'm not particularly good at playing but it comes with us when we go away in the van and friends have a go on it when they come round for dinner.

Photograph

This was a birthday present from one of my best friends, Amy Knowles, who is a Grammy-nominated graphic designer. The photograph is by Annie Leibovitz and was taken for an Elton John album called The Union where he collaborated with Leon Russell. Amy was working for a company called Peacock who were behind the design. This picture is a pre-shot taken before Elton and Leon made their entrance, just to get the colours and light correct. It is a beautiful image and a very rare photograph and, because I play piano myself, it has sentimental value to me.

Sideboard

I launched Patience Jewellery last year. The previous August, we did a photo shoot with all the new collections at this amazing old schoolhouse in East Lothian. It was set up through a group of guys who own a props company called Old School Fabrications. This sideboard was lying outside and we pulled it in to the photo-shoot. The guys let me take it home and we did it up. I love how it looks but it also reminds me of that nerve-wracking month before the launch when I had left my job and had told everyone about Patience and they were all waiting to see these images.

Jewellery

One of the pieces from my debut collection is a five-bell necklace. It's my favourite piece and it's inspired by childhood memories. It makes me think of when you go to the woods in the spring and there are blankets of bluebells everywhere and that feeling of longer nights coming in and summer on the horizon. I wanted to try and translate that feeling and it resonated with a lot of people. I'm very proud of it.
