Providing the right temperature for seedlings is essential. Some vegetable seeds, such as lettuce and peas, will germinate at temperatures as low as 5C, but the cooler the soil or compost, the longer germination takes and the fewer seedlings you'll get. Most vegetable plants do best with temperatures between 15C and 22C, so you should aim for that.
