While we had been training hard (allegedly) and putting in the miles, it seems there is one area in which we are sadly lacking: bike maintenance.
A quick straw poll confirmed the worst: only one of us could change a punctured tyre (and even then we weren't convinced that wasn't a little white lie to save face). Likewise, there was about as much chance of us collectively being able to repair a broken chain as land a space probe on Mars, the intricacies of gears remained a mystery and few of us could pick a tyre lever – or any other bike-specific tools for that matter – out of a line-up.
