chain gang Chain gang: week five

Basic maintenance, part one

With Jon Boyde, mechanic, Alpine Bikes (www.alpinebikes.com)

What advice would you give someone new to cycling or returning after a break?

"Firstly make sure the bike is the right size. The other thing is to ensure it is best suited to its primary purpose. If you're mainly commuting to work you should look towards a hybrid with an upright riding position. For comfort over longer distances as well as speed and the option of racing, go for a road bike. And if you're going to be off road, a mountain bike would be best, offering strength, versatility and stability. Having the right bike and correct size will make cycling so much more enjoyable."
