John Muir Way:
This 134-mile long walk, opened last week, starts in Dunbar, the birth place of naturalist and conservationist John Muir, and ends in Helensburgh. It takes 7-10 days to walk it, but the first 15-mile section, from Dunbar to North Berwick, takes in the beaches of John Muir Country Park. johnmuirway.org
Surfing: Wave faces as big as 12ft at Dunbar make this the prime surfing destination in East Lothian, though nearby Belhaven is great for beginners. East Links Family Park: This farm-themed animal park near Dunbar includes a wide range of attractions, including a train safari through the animal paddocks, and a small animal barn where children can handle rabbits. www.eastlinks.co.uk
Bass Rock: just round the coast from Dunbar off North Berwick is the largest single island gannet colony in the world. Tourist boats from the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick circumnavigate the rock several times a day Boats from here also go to the Isle of May, famous for its puffins. www.seabird.org
Tantallon Castle: Built in the 1350s as the seat of the powerful Douglas Earls of Angus, the castle is perched dramatically on cliffs east of North Berwick. Owner Historic Scotland says it is "the last truly great castle built in Scotland". The surrounding area is now a haven for wildflowers and wildlife. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk
