Mere seconds from Princes Street and part of the Rutland Hotel, these luxurious apartments are a flawless base for a visit to the capital.

Recently upgraded, with no expense spared if our one-bedroom apartment's free-standing bath, rainfall shower and state-of-the-art kitchen are any measure, the accommodation is luxurious.

Such is the wow factor that we could easily kick off our shoes and relax, but the rarity of a break without our 14-month-old daughter compels us to venture outside.

Thankfully we don't have far to go, as we have been advised to pop into a recently opened "gin joint" called Heads And Tales, just round the corner from our apartment. We don't have to be told twice and make our way to the basement bar, where we soon realise the rave reviews were spot-on.

Not being gin aficionados, we are given a masterclass in the spirit by manager Jody Buchan. It soon becomes clear that what he doesn't know about gin isn't worth hearing, as he gives us an intriguing insight into the spirit's many facets and, of course, lets us sample some classic cocktails.

After the drinks, dinner is on our minds and, again, we don't have far to go, as the Kyloe steakhouse is handily located upstairs. With award-winning head chef David Haetzman in the kitchen, we are anticipating a high-quality meal selected from a menu which is a bonanza for carnivores, with ample options for vegetarians and pescatarians. My fillet steak is expertly cooked and is washed down with a delectable bottle of white Rioja. Throw in a fabulous view of Princes Street and Kyloe proves a wonderful place to cap off the night. Unable to eat another morsel, we retire to "our" apartment.

The following morning dawns with the realisation we have to hand back the keys to our luxury home, but the apartments will be our choice of accommodation the next time we visit Edinburgh.
