Easy to reach but with a distinct island feel, Mull makes for a fine cycling destination. This circuit of North Mull is not for the faint hearted, however, being akin to a rollercoaster ride from time to time. But fabulous descents to pretty bays on the west coast and the return through a quiet glen are fair recompense for the required effort.

From Tobermory, follow the road for Dervaig steeply uphill to gain views over the Sound of Mull. Pass tranquil Loch Peallach before the road drops then rises in a hairpin climb. You soon reach Dervaig, one of the few villages on the route, before an easier section leads to the white sands of Calgary Bay, which are ideal for a break.

Heading inland, a hard climb is rewarded with a fine view of Ben More, Mull’s sole Munro. Descend back to the coast for easier cycling and keep straight for Ulva, ignoring a road for Dervaig. Climb again before gloriously flat cycling by Loch na Keal. At a T-junction turn left for Salen and follow the A848 -- busy at ferry crossing times --north for 1.5 miles (2.5km). Veer left on to the minor road, signed Dervaig, which leads up the blissfully quiet Glen Aros. Cycle to the round white tower of Kilmore Church in Dervaig before following the outward route back to Tobermory.
