Most of us think of Scottish emigrants to North America as cleared highlanders or desperately poor lowlanders, but I have come to Virginia on the trail of a less-remembered Scottish tribe, the 17th-century merchants who commuted to the American colonies around the Chesapeake River area from Greenock or Port Glasgow, servicing a trade based on the export of slave-grown tobacco and the import of quality Scottish goods to civilise Virginia society.
