The elegant 18th-century mansion of Newhailes and its surroundings have been in the care of the National Trust for Scotland since 1997. The trust has pursued a philosophy of doing "as much as is necessary but as little as possible" to the internal decor and fittings and the external fabric of the house. The result is a building with a "lived in" look, rather than a squeaky clean stately home.
