What is it?

An Android-centric media streaming box.

How will it change my life?

Google made waves last year with the Chromecast which allows media streaming from Android devices to your television. This year they have set their sights on enhancing the living-room experience and branching out into TV services with the Nexus Player.

Good points?

Google have essentially attempted to address the faults of the Chromecast and rebrand it as something more evolved by adding a proper remote control, slick interface, online streaming and access to apps from the Play Store. The flattened circle design of the box is unusual compared to its rivals and can comfortably sit in even the tightest of spaces.

The remote control is simply presented but effective and similar to those of modern DVD players with the added functionality of a built-in microphone for rapid voice searching. The content is provided from any connected device via Google cast including BBC iPlayer, NOW TV, BT Sport and Netflix which are seamless on screen despite the roundabout way the services are delivered. The available Gamepad accessory adds a different dimension to Android mobile gaming by giving them a greater stage.

Bad points?

Despite a package that promises much it still seems a little empty, a bit like an absent-minded professor. A device that depends and concentrates on an internet connection should provide an Ethernet port for stability and speed, but instead the Nexus Player relies solely on WiFi. Most of the content is only available through your smartphone which is not ideal for a media centre.

Best for ...

Android lovers looking for a quick upgrade to Chromecast without losing integration with their other mobile gadgets.

Avoid if ...

You are content with TV minus the bells and whistles of app access. Unless your gadgets are predominantly Android there is not a lot to be gained.

Score: 7/10, until more compatible games and services are released you are better plumping for the Chromecast at half the price or Amazon Fire TV.
