What is it?
IOS wireless gaming controller
How will it change my life?
The idea of a dedicated Bluetooth games controller for IOS devices seems a tad over the top at first. Why go to all that expense for games relatively unsophisticated compared to proper consoles and played on tiny screens?
The Stratus XL grabbed my doubts and smashed them into the dirt with one press of the fire button. The enjoyment was immense, mediocre games took on a new lease of life and I found myself sneaking away for one more match on Fifa.
Good points?
In order to play the desired game, it has to be compatible with the controller. Fortunately there are more than 580 to choose from and this list is increasing everyday so it's unlikely you will run out of new titles to try.
The functionality is exactly the same as a full blow games console controller and brings the best bits of the Xbox and PlayStation together.
The game pad and buttons are well engineered and feel sturdy in the hand but not so bulky that operation is made difficult. This design gives confidence that the Stratus will endure the harsh treatment dealt out during the frustration of a last minute loss to Brondby in the Champions League qualifier. They would also be no problems in swapping the precious/fragile phone for controller in the hands of your little ones.
SteelSeries, the makers of the Stratus have also included a handy social element where you and three friends can take alternate shots with the controller and it will remember whose turn it is. Sadly there is still no game where you can see Justin Bieber meet a grisly fate, an opportunity missed surely?
Bad points?
It isn't the most compact of gadgets so hardly ideal for the daily commute. It also requires iOS 7 or later, therefore ruling out those with older devices. While slick and high-quality, it's a touch pricey for a platform-limited piece of hardware.
Best for ...
Mobile gaming addicts who are always aiming for that elusive high-score.
Avoid if ...
You don't own a device stand as holding an iPad while trying to negotiate the controller buttons would likely end in YouTube/You've Been Framed humiliation.
Score: 7/10, finger tapping fun.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.Â
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.Â
That is invaluable.Â
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
