X Factor contestant Melanie Masson, from Glasgow, who is making a reappearance for the finals on Saturday night, reveals her 60s make-up inspiration, how she tames her wild hair and looking after her voice for recording her new album.

How would you describe your beauty routine?

Most days I always have to be camera-ready for interviews, television and gigs. This involves a lot of make-up throughout the day with constant touch-ups of more make-up. I always remove every scrap every night and without fail, I always moisturise.

Any other tips?

As a singer I have to look after myself on the inside as well as outside.

I take care of my voice and try to keep it as hydrated as I can. I drink lots of water and swear by warm water with fresh ginger, lemon and the miraculous Manuka honey which is a great cure and prevailant for most ails. I try to sleep well which is not easy with two young children but I find even a few hours of good sleep is better than a lot of poor sleep. I take vitamins like Echinacea, B12, D, C with Zinc, and a multi vitamin. During a heavy singing schedule, I use an organic throat lubricant with liquorice, thyme and myrrh, I steam with Albas oil and Vocalzones throat sweets are always on hand.

Melanie’s favourite products

Dermalogica

I have sensitive skin so I love the whole Dermalogica range. I love the Daily Microfoliant (£29.99) and the Active Moist Moisturiser (£22.25).

Fudge Body Builder Booster (around £10)

My curly hair has become a trademark and I’m flying the flag for girls with curls! I love Fudge products. The Body Builder range of shampoos and conditioners work really well as curly hair can also be quite dry.

L’Oreal Mythic Oil (around £13)

I also love L’Oreal Mythic Oil to add extra moisture.

Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eye Liner in Caviar Ink (£17)

I’m inspired by the late 60s so I always go for a thick eyeliner. I particularly like Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eye liner in Caviar Ink for precision and endurance.

Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara in Jet Black (around £14)

The best mascara I’ve found so far for a brilliant false eyelash effect is Smashbox Full Exposure in jet black.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Cream Make-up (£20)

I like my foundation to look quite natural as I’m quite pale in colour. I’ve found a perfect match in Elizabeth Arden’s flawless finish in Natural Sun Beige. A nice coverage with a lovely dewy glow.

Soap and Glory Daily Smooth Body butter (£8.50)

I never skimp on body lotion. I love Soap and Glory Daily Smooth Body Butter. It smells divine and the packaging is gorgeous.

Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue Eau de Toilette (£46 for 50ml)

I am never without my favourite perfume. I can’t get enough of Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue. I’ve loved it for years and never tire of it. I get through bottles of this. You know what to buy me for Christmas!

What’s next for you?

What I’m doing now is being kept extremely busy! Lots of gigs and very soon start recording my debut album.
