The festive season is upon us, and with it comes the kind of temperatures which require some stylish knitwear.

In Scotland, even running across the road to pick up a carton of milk in December requires the addition of thermals and a woolly jumper. Since a budget fashionista has to keep herself cosy, I’ve looked into this year’s biggest woollen accessory trend - the fail-safe beanie hat!

No longer just confined to teenage boys and ‘second day hair’ - thanks to 2012’s love of all things 90s and street wear influenced, the humble beanie has had a high- fashion makeover. Now the favourite go-to accessory of fashion it-girls like, Rita Ora, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Cara Delevingne; the beanie is officially a stylish addition to any wardrobe.

With many different styles to choose from, I’ve narrowed it down to my four favourite trends: pattern, skate, slogan and girly beanies - all coming in at under £30, to ensure you have enough money left over for a hot water bottle...

A brightly patterned beanie is a great way to brighten up dull winter days, These two from Lazy Oaf and Miss Pom Pom are not for the faint hearted - but the bright colours and designs will dress up a plain chunky knit and jeans perfectly.

Skate/street wear has been a big trend in 2012, and grunge sweaters, backpacks and denim cutoffs have gone from scruffy to chic. Garments from independent skatewear brands are a big favourite with the likes of Rihanna and Rita Ora - if you’re not lucky enough to have a boyfriend/brother’s closet to raid, get yourself one of these beanies from Hype or Scottish Based Lucky Edge Decks. Accessorise with a midi skirt and some gold jewelry.

Slogan beanies are another way to wear the look, both of these ones come from Scottish designers Bonnie Bling and Dawntroversial - so you can be safe in the knowledge that not only are you on trend, but you are supporting your local fashion industry! Win, win.

If you’re not a fan of streetwear, and prefer something a bit more ladylike - go for an all over colour or girly pattern. These beanies from House of Fraser’s Dickens & Jones and Monki will look perfect with matching scarves and lots of layers - ideal for a spot of ice skating or a bit of shopping at the Christmas market.

As much as I’m all about keeping well within budget, I can’t help but hope Santa rewards my thriftiness with some slightly more expensive presents under the Christmas tree.

I would LOVE a cosy cashmere beanie from Scottish Borders based Rosie Sudgen. Recently featured in Grazia’s Fashion Chart, the £89 hat may be worth every penny! Also, as a great beanie alternative - any fashionista would be lucky to find a Chouchou fur-trimmed hood in their Christmas stocking.
