Christopher Kane has been named Best British Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards 2013.

The designer, originally from Motherwell, founded the Christopher Kane label in 2006, with his sister Tammy.

Since then the brand, a favourite of stars including Kylie Monogue, has gone from strength to strength, and in January it was announced that it had been acquired by luxury clothing conglomorate PPR.

"Christopher Kane is a rare thing: one of the most talented designers of this generation as well as one of the most astute businessmen," said Elle Editor-In-Chief Lorraine Candy. "Along with his partner and sister Tammy they have grown this brand cleverly and with a foolproof long term strategy. They have been smart and worked very hard. I can only expect big things going forward."

Other winners at the annual awards event included Scots singer Emeli Sandi, named best music act and whose album Our Version Of Events was last year's UK biggest seller on the back of her Olympic ceremony performances.

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper landed the best actor prize at the Elle Style Awards - after missing out on a Bafta for The Silver Linings Playbook the previous evening.

Kick-Ass and Hugo actress Chloe Moretz, who celebrated her 16th birthday on Sunday, was named the next future icon, while hit US series Game Of Thrones was named best TV show.

The event - officially called the Elle Style Awards 2013 in association with Next - was hosted by Radio 1 breakfast show host Nick Grimshaw.

Other stars at the Elle Style Awards included a heavily pregnant Peaches Geldof, former Bond girl Rosamund Pike, Bafta winner Juno Temple, Laura Carmichael from Downton Abbey and Elizabeth Olsen.
