The Scots actress has been named as the face of Chanel’s pre-fall Paris-Edimbourg collection, which was showcased at Linlithgow Palace in December.

Karl Lagerfeld’s  2012-13 Métiers d'Art Paris-Edimbourg collection was inspired by Mary Queen of Scots and featured a take on Scottish heritage, with tartan, tweed, lace ruffs and sporrans.

"Tilda perfectly embodies the Paris-Edimbourg collection. She is of course Scottish, but more than that she is a modern woman, a timeless icon of elegance," said Lagerfeld, creative director of Chanel.

Swinton, who lives in Nairn with her partner Sandro Kopp and two sons, has a long-standing Scottish heritage.  She was born in London but her father, Major-General Sir John Swinton is Scottish, and her family's Scottish links go back to the Middle Ages. Her paternal great-grandfather was a Scottish politician, and her maternal great-great-grandfather was Scottish botanist John Hutton Balfour.

The 52 year old actress, who won the best supporting actress Oscar in 2007 for her role in Michael Clayton, has also recently teamed up with David Bowie for his latest music video.
