Salad doesn't need to just be a side dish, or even dull iceberg with croutons.

Yelp has picked some great Glasgow and Edinburgh spots to indulge in eating of the lighter kind!

Martha's

142A St Vincent Street, Glasgow

Leanne R raves that "the salads are so fresh and the pork is just out of this world. So juicy, not at all chewy, just melts in your mouth. They also give you a little dressing with the noodle salad which complements the pork nicely."

Earthy Canonmills

1-6 Canonmills Bridge, Stockbridge, Edinburgh

"Man am I inspired by the salad menu at Earthy," gasps Valerie M. "The selection of about 10 different salad options from which I chose four to make up my salad platter for my main has really shown me how interesting and sexy a salad can be!"

Bruti Ma Buoni

106-108 Brunswick Street, Glasgow

Hayley M says, "the food is lovely and the menu has a mixture of tapas, big plates, pizzas, brunch items - I love the big salads!" With variations including anchovy, tuna, goats' cheese and chicken, there'll be something to take your fancy!

Brew Lab

6-8 South College Street, Newington, Edinburgh

Though perhaps best known for its coffee, Cheryl C thinks it's important to note that "the food is really, really good", and in particular the salad - "I've gone for whatever salad they've had on each time I've been in just about, and I've never been disappointed."

Red Onion

257 West Campbell Street, Glasgow

You'll find plenty of salad options here - Caesar, raita and gem heart and avocado. Lynne M recommends "the goats' cheese salad" as well as the "excellent Scottish staples like haggis and salmon served with a twist".

Thyme

44 Earl Grey Street, Tollcross, Edinburgh

Laura D's "favourite takeaway lunch place close to work" is the home of "amazing" salad. With offerings like "the half & half (half salad, half couscous) chicken and falafel, or chicken & cashew nuts" we can see why it's her regular lunch spot!

Guy's

24 Candleriggs, Glasgow

The a la carte menu features "bang bang chicken and Szechwan salad with cucumber, spring onions, sesame, peanut & chilli sauce" as a starter. Why not take Jenna C's recommendation and follow with "the seared duck breast with porcini mushrooms in a balsamic sauce"?

Hemma

79 Parliament Road, Old Town, Edinburgh

The "lovely warm, inviting feel" means this is the perfect spot to kick back and chow down on a hearty salad. Alex J loves the "smoked trout and potato salad, which was absolutely delicious and an enormous portion to boot".

Kember & Jones

134 Byres Road, Glasgow

Claire W admits I would single handedly swipe all of the pastries, sandwiches, tarts and salads into my mouth, all at once". Salads include Greek feta, chorizo with Manchego, rare roast beef and pear, blue cheese and walnut.

Nikki's Sandwich Bar

5a William Street, West End, Edinburgh

Menno V notes that on top of the choices of "a roll or baked potato" they also provide "a daily changing salad bar" here. This variety is no doubt why he's "been going here for the last 7 years for lunch when in the office".
