What is it?

A wildlife surveillance video camera. Nature regularly presents a stunning show, from rutting stags in autumn to nesting birds foraging for twigs in spring.

Yet, witnessing such remarkable spectacles relies largely on being in the right place at the right time. Opting for a wildlife surveillance camera like Lidl's is a great way to discover more about the creatures that share our space.

Good Points?

Although less than half the price of most comparable cameras, the budget tag doesn't mean compromising on quality as Lidl's model deftly goes toe-to-toe with many of the more expensive devices on the market.

Features include infrared flash and dual motion sensors that capture every event in perfect HD clarity, day or night. It also comes supplied with an 8GB memory card.

The motion sensors activate recording so there is no wasted storage or battery life, while the LCD screen gives a short replay to determine if the footage is worth keeping and means you don't have to trawl through hours of video to find gems.

The automatic time lapse is fun and adds a bit of professionalism when channelling your inner Bill Oddie or Sir David Attenborough.

Bad points?

Very few. If I had to pick holes it would be that, while the supplied AA batteries give a stated stand-by of six months, it would have been nice for the gadget to work off a solar pack for prolonged coverage.

Best for ...

Those who don't have the time or inclination to sit glued to a pair of binoculars for hours on end.

Avoid if ...

If you'd rather not know what prowls your garden at night.

Score: 9.5/10.
