Drygate Brewery

85 Drygate, Glasgow

What is it: Drygate opened three years ago to a lot of hype and it is safe to say that it has lived up to that hype. Over that time it has grown a loyal following with its “fearless brewing” and innovative events. The venue is made up of the bar and kitchen, a bottle shop, an event space, an amazing terrace and of course the brewery itself.

Interesting fact: You might think that Drygate was just part of the Tennent's machine but it is actually an independent joint venture between Scotland’s oldest brewer Tennent’s, and Williams Bros Brewing Co, an innovative Scottish craft brewer. The Drygate brewery lives within what was previously a derelict 1960s box factory.

Verdict: I hang about here a lot and for different reasons. I could be here at for meeting during the day then heading in after work for some beers. The management have not just rested on the fact that the place looks cool and serves great beer and food: instead, they've ensured the venue feel alive and vibrant through tours and events. There always seems to be something going on here which keeps fans of Drygate coming back for more.

Drink: As well as the extensive beer offering there is a strong selection of spirits and wine. I usually stick with beer as it includes some of the best there is in the city. They have their own beers on draught but have many other brands in bottles for you to try. I usually go for the Drygate Gladeye IPA, which is packed with hoppy goodness for £3.95.

Food: The food has been consistently good here. In some other craft beer venues the food can be an afterthought, but here they put a lot of effort into their offering. The gastro-style menu is full of hearty and tasty sounding dishes that are perfect for allowing you to enjoy the beer at the same time. If you are not worried about the waistline then go for the pork, black pudding and chorizo burger with mature cheddar, apple chutney, toasted brioche bun, house slaw and triple-cooked chips for £10.95.

Prices: Pretty good value for money right across the board.

Children: Actually it's pretty child-friendly here and there is a good food offering for the wee ones as well.

Alfresco: Drygate has one of the best terraces in the city, which even on a half decent day is packed out. I drive past here to and from my office and it makes me extremely happy to see folk out there enjoying good beer in glorious Glasgow weather.

Perfect for: Meeting up with friends after work for a bite to eat and a couple of beers before catching one of the many wide and varied events they have on here.

Avoid if: It’s kind of hard to find a reason not to come here. My dad actually used the phrase, “full of Hipsters” for the first time when he came here with me, but then again he thinks anyone with facial hair is one. So if you are like my dad then maybe this place isn't for you.
