Style and substance

Situated right on Piccadilly, this five-star hotel is one of the grand old ladies of Mayfair, having opened its doors in 1927. Art Deco history and glamour are still very much the order of the day – there are stunning ballrooms, lounges, lobbies and meeting rooms that take you right back to the Roaring Twenties – but the thoroughly modern facilities and super-friendly staff ensure a relaxed feel. The period building, meanwhile, with its high ceilings and big windows, ensures all 300 rooms and suites have the sort of spacious feel it can be difficult to find in modern London.

Sleeping matters

A recent full-scale renovation brought an elegant and contemporary feel to the bedrooms and suites, and all are inspired by the Art Deco elegance of the hotel’s ballroom, with 1920s-style lamps, mirrors and bathrooms. Each room also has an ornament depicting dalmatians, inspired by Disney’s famous film, which is set in neighbouring Green Park.

Food for thought

The main restaurant is the wonderful Mercante, showcasing authentic Italian cookery and the best seasonal produce. Run by head chef Davide d’Ignazio, it offers regional flavour combinations served in beautifully appointed surroundings. For the ultimate tasting experience, try the “no menu” chef’s table, where Davide cooks the food in front of you, providing a feast for all the sense. The newly opened Smith and Whistle, meanwhile, serves up traditional pie and mash with a modern twist, accompanied by craft beers from around the world.

Drink in the sights

The central Palm Court has been sumptuously renovated, accentuating the Art Deco features and stained glass, and makes for a most stylish place to enjoy a cocktail. The Court is also the setting for the hotel’s renowned “Birdcage” afternoon tea, which takes for its inspiration the unique architectural structure of the building. Served with a choice of 27 blends of teas and a selection of deliciously delicate sandwiches and pastries, it is a tasty reminder of a more elegant age. The aforementioned Smith and Whistle, meanwhile, holds its own among Mayfair’s multitude of style bars and stocks a particularly impressive selection of gins.

Nice touch

Every guest room has a free 4G “handy” which offers free internet and calls and access to a wealth of information about the area.
