Kailzie Gardens, Peebles, EH45 9HT

Kailzie Gardens is a private garden first mentioned in 1296 as West Kelloch, which means “wooded glen”. The garden sits on the side of a hill, with the Tweed flowing through the valley.

The Majors walk and Burnside walk have magnificent trees including the oldest European larch, planted in 1725. Azaleas, drifts of snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells carpet the ground during spring.

In the large walled garden, two long herbaceous borders lead to a water fountain, a serene focal point. There is also a slate vase in the centre of the lawn which was designed and constructed by James Parker. Island beds are planted with large shrubs, roses and groups of hardy perennials, with meconopsis blooming in spring.

The roses must also be hardy, with Bonica, Lucky, Gordon’s College, Chandos Beauty and Sally Holmes all faring well. Shrub roses are among the many that flourish in the garden.

Throughout June, the laburnum tunnel is glorious and borders the flower and vegetable areas. The large Mackenzie and Moncur greenhouses are filled with a variety of tender plants and a fine collection of old pelargoniums and fuchsias.

There is fun for all the family at Kailzie, with a children’s play area, fishing pond, putting and an osprey and wildlife viewing centre. The Courtyard Cafe in the 18th-century square provides light lunches, teas and coffees. A small shop sells crafts from the Kailzie Crafters, among other gifts, and a good selection of plants.

Kailzie is a member of the not-for-profit garden tourism group Discover Scottish Gardens.
