Sometimes what you're looking for is right under your nose. And if you're looking for a world-class wine, chances are, it's in a supermarket near you. No matter your budget or favourite style, the good news is, judges at two major international wine awards – namely the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) – have a taste for a bargain.

So, whether you love a Provencal pink or a mighty malbec, are charmed by chardonnay or can't wait to be seduced by a spicy shiraz, there are some terrific deals to be had.

With wide availability for both still and sparkling, here are some medal winners and commendable finalists from both sets of awards, to pluck from the shelves...

1. Exquisite Collection Malbec 2017, Uco Valley, Argentina (£5.99, Aldi)

With our glorious summer heatwave in full swing, BBQs bring together a multitude of flavours and for sizzling steaks and burgers, this IWSC silver award winner works a treat. It offers ripe plums and blackberries scented with violet aromas, with good Uco Valley structure.

2. WM Morrison The Best Languedoc Rouge 2016, France (£6, Morrisons)

A rustic red and finalist at the IWC, this is a lovely, easy drinking weekday wine with enticing and distinctively savoury 'garrigue' flavours of rosemary and thyme that influences wines from the sunny Languedoc. A touch of spice complements the herby character.

3. Co-op Irresistible Gavi del Commune di Gavi 2017, Italy (£8.50, The Co-operative, in-store only)

How good can a supermarket own label Gavi be? In the case of this IWC finalist, just gorgeous! Along with its reds, Piedmont, Italy is also home to some of Italy's best whites and the cortese grape thrives in Gavi's mineral rich soils. Crisp, fresh and vibrant with a silky mouthfeel, generous peach, honey and pear flavours are enlivened by the zippy, mouth-watering finish.

4. Asda Extra Special Selection Pinot Noir 2016, New Zealand (£8.50, Asda)

A plush, perfumed pinot and another finalist at the IWC, what's not to love about this strawberry scented, softly delicious red with raspberry, cherry and strawberry flavours? It also has a silky elegance and can be served lightly chilled - just pop in the fridge 30 minutes before serving.

5. Baron Gassier Cuvee Elegance 2017, Cotes de Provence, France (£10 from £12, now until August 14, Sainsbury's)

Fashionably pale, this IWC Great Value Champion Rose is the quintessential Provencal pink with a drink-me-now-freshness we've been filling our ice buckets with all summer. With pretty florals and fragrant aromatics of white peach accented by exotic fruits, it was cited as "vibrant with a round finish and a delicate, elegant energy."

6. M&S Vire-Clesse Florent Rouve 2016, France (£14, Marks & Spencer)

Winner of the IWC Great Value Champion White which the judges described as "sheer deliciousness," this richly fruited Burgundy ticks all the right boxes with its creamy bouquet of peaches, honeysuckle and baked apple with a freshness and well-balanced acidity framing layered flavours of citrusy fruits. Mildly oaked but not heavy, it has just enough minerality to keep it fresh and elegant.

7. The Hedonist Shiraz 2016, McLaren Vale, Australia (£14.49, Waitrose)

This IWC Gold medal winner is an inky black beauty from the flourishing, verdant vineyards of McLaren Vale. Made from biodynamic grapes (processed organically and sustainbly), this velvety smooth shiraz is marked by a deep bouquet of dark berry fruits with a core of intense black fruit preserves, laced with pepper and spice. To add to its kudos, it's made by Walter Clappis, one of Australia's most talented winemakers.

8. Tesco Finest Premier Cru Champagne NV, France (£19, Tesco)

This IWC Great Value Champion Sparkling Gold medal winner is made from chardonnay and pinot noir, it's bright, fresh and toasty with layers of pristine citrus fruits, complex yeasty notes, a lovely creamy mousse and long, succulent finish.
