Dark circles under the eye area are one of the most common skin concerns.

The circles can be different in colour - from a blueish purple tone to dark yellow and brown - but they can all be treated in the same way.

Sadly, dark cirlces won't vanish overnight. But with patience and time - and the right products - you can make a difference.

What causes dark circles?

Your genes: dark circles can be inherited within families. Anyone with Gaelic roots could be particularly prone because of their pale skin. The dark circles will be more visible as the skin is more transparent. If you have also inherited a deep set bone structure the dark circles will be more visible due to shadowing in that area.

Lack of sleep: getting a good eight hours has never been more important if you suffer from dark circles. If you are lacking in sleep or have an abnormal sleep pattern it can cause the skin to appear paler and dull, thus allowing the blood underneath the eye area to be darker and more visible.

Dehydration: not having a substantial daily intake of water can be a big cause of dark circles. Your skin needs constant hydration so it can wash out toxins and keep the eye area nourished. Aim for at least 7-8 glasses a day to keep dark circles at bay.

Ageing: dark circles can be more visible as you get older due to the loss of collagen in the skin, which will cause the eye are to be more delicate and prone to damage.
