With the Rewind Festival coming to Scotland on July 24-26, bringing acts like the sensational Bananarama and Sister Sledge to Perth's Scone Palace, Faron Stalker has rounded up the ten craziest trends of the 80s to get you ready for the big weekend.


 
1.    Mullets: Short in the front and long in the back, the mullet was popular amongst all kinds of men in the 1980s.

2.    Shoulder pads: Pioneered by glamourous screen queen Joan Collins and seen on soaps like Dynasty and Dallas, shoulder pads featured in men and women’s clothing during the 80s.

3.    Tracksuits: The fitness craze during the era saw an explosion in activewear like tracksuits and trainers worn as an everyday look.

4.    Perms: Men and women alike went to great lengths to make their hair bigger.

5.    Makeup: Eyeshadow and lipstick in neon hues were popular in the 80s. New Romantics like Boy George often experimented with gender-bending cosmetics.

6.    Gloves: Laced and fingerless gloves were made popular by stars like Madonna.

7.    Large frames: Oversized, thick-rimmed glasses were all the rage in the Eighties; bonus points if they were plastic with tortoise-shell colouring. Elvis Costello and Morrissey were the most prominent wearers of the iconic NHS specs, which enjoyed a fashion revival in the early to mid 00s with the ironic hipster trend.

8.    Spandex: Spandex became popular with the aerobics movement, led by Jane Fonda and Olivia Newton-John, but was worn by both men and women.

9.    Buccaneer shirts: Groups like Duran Duran, Boy George and Adam and the Ants borrowed some of their style from pirates, favouring lace, frills and wide belts to cinch at the hips. Designer Vivienne Westwood spearheaded the look with her iconic Pirate Collection in 1981.

10.  Miami Vice style: Light colored suits layered over t-shirts, Ray-Ban wayfarers and loafers became wildly popular in the 80s thanks to the American crime drama, Miami Vice.
