Bavaria Brauhaus
30 Bothwell Street, Glasgow
What is it: Bavaria Brauhaus opened at the tail end of last year in what was formerly the Madness Theatre Of Fun on the corner of Bothwell Street and Wellington Street. The A-listed building is stunning from the outside and I was intrigued to see the interiors. The theme is based around the convivial beer halls of Munich, Germany, with long wooden tables and wood-panelled walls. This simple decor really works with the stunning original features.
Interesting fact: A bespoke ceiling mural by Glaswegian artist Nichol Wheatley includes a portrait of one of Glasgow’s favourite sons, writer and artist Alasdair Gray. The portrait is one of those perspective drawings that’s depicted across several surfaces on the ceiling and only makes sense if seen from a certain angle.
Verdict: I really enjoyed my visit. Glaswegians seem to love this Bavarian style of bar and restaurant. Maybe it’s the fact you get to sit close to folks and get a bit of banter on the go?
Drink: Quite a few authentic beers on draught with names I couldn’t pronounce. I went for a 500ml bottle of Krombacher Pils for £4.50.
Food: Authentic menu full of hearty and rustic German treats. I opted for something from the express menu, probably aimed at the number of large offices in the area. I really enjoyed the Kase Spazle, a kind of Bavarian noodles for £5.
Prices: Not too bad at all, with specials on all the time.
Children: Welcome if dining; a great menu on offer for them.
Alfresco: Space for a few seats outside although all the fun happens on the inside.
Perfect for: Meeting up with a few mates and kicking off a big night out, German style.
Avoid if: You were looking for a romantic quiet place to go on a date.
