One of the biggest cycling initiatives in the UK, promoting the health, environmental and lifestyle benefits of pedal power with events around the country. A significant number of affiliated events are in Scotland, including Edinburgh's Festival of Cycling, which includes 10 days of rides, city tours, workshops, and social happenings. Also weighing in with a number of tie-ins is the two-week Glasgow Cycle Festival, starting on Saturday - look out for big Bike Week events in Pollok and Alexandra parks over the weekend, both free.

2 Men's Health 10K Festival

Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, Saturday and Sunday

Two days of mass-participation running events in the south side of Glasgow, culminating in Sunday's Father's Day 10K. Designed to be accessible enough for beginners while also providing a challenge for the more dedicated, the course loops from Bellahouston to Pollok Park and back. New this year, there's also a Mens 5K and family 3K run on Saturday, while children can also enrol in1K Rascal Run and 200m toddler dash events. An event Expo also features children's activities, sports retailers, information stands, health checks and sports massages.

3 Crail Food Festival

The East Neuk fishing village of Crail hosts its fourth annual food festival. With an emphasis on local produce, the Community Hall has been made over into a festival hub and food market, with a tasty side garnish of activities including tastings, cookery demonstrations, and cupcake decoration. Sunday's Harbour Day also brings an extensive range of stands to the seafront - the perfect place to sample the region's seafood while enjoying specially organised games for kids on the beach. Festival day passes are £3, children under 12 free.

4 The Marathon Storytelling Cycle Challenge

Across Scotland, from tomorrow

Over the next few weeks, actor Tam Dean Burn is undertaking a cycling tour of Scotland, reading every story by Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson to young audiences along the way. Given that the former children's laureate has penned more than 195 books, the Glasgow 2014 Festival-endorsed trip will take until the end of July to complete. Tomorrow's launch takes place in North Kelvin Meadow in Glasgow, before further stops in Edinburgh (Saturday), and Linlithgow (Sunday).

5 Borders Book Festival

Harmony House, Melrose, today to Sunday

Four days of talks, panels, signings and writing workshops featuring a heavyweight cast from the worlds of literature, academia, politics and entertainment; marquee names appearing include comedian Jennifer Saunders, crime fiction queen Lynda LaPlante, and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. Along with a number of events inspired by the centenary of the First World War and the 200th anniversary of Walter Scott's Waverley, Scotland's future also figures prominently, with referendum debate between Jim Sillars and Michael Forsyth, and a talk from Gordon Brown. A family festival also runs on Saturday and Sunday.

6 Leith Festival Gala Day

Leith Links, Edinburgh, Saturday

An annual community-centric, carnival-themed mix of stalls, live performances, fairground rides, and food and drink. Kicking off at 11am and running through to 4.30pm, the event also includes a Gala Day Pageant, which starts at Balfour Street at noon, before making its way down to the Links via Leith Walk and Queen Charlotte Place. First staged in 1907, Leith Gala now also serves as a curtain raiser for the Leith Festival - nine days of cultural events, live gigs, exhibitions and shows within a mile of the Foot of the Walk.

7 Queen's Baton Relay

Across Scotland, from Saturday

A chance to cheer on bearers of the Queen's Baton, spiritual cousin of the Olympic Torch, in communities across Scotland over the next few weeks. The home leg starts on Saturday with a tour of locations in Edinburgh and an inauguration event in Prince Street Gardens, before moving onto Lothian and the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and then Ayrshire over the next week. Around 4000 will carry the Baton before it arrives in Glasgow on July 23.

8 Father's Day Golf Tournament

Turnberry, Ayrshire, Sunday

Golfing families fired up by this weekend's US Open can experience a taste of the real thing on Sunday, with the fourth Father's Day event to be held at Turnberry, itself a four-time host of the British Open. Open to dads, sons, daughters and family members, the tournament takes place on the Ayrshire resort's Championship standard Kintyre course. There are still a select number of tee slots available in the afternoon; sessions are £89 per team of two, including a warm-up at the venue's high-tech Performance Academy.

9 Robots Live!

National Museum of Flight, East Fortune, Sunday

See the mechanical stars of Robot Wars bashing each other to scrap in this live version of the TV hit. For the uninitiated, this means a series of gladiatorial battles between heavily armoured, remote controlled robots armed with nasty looking hammers and angle grinders in a booby-trapped arena. Away from the carnage, there's also the chance to assemble simple electronic devices, while finding out about some of the more practical uses for the technology. Admission is £6-£11, with under-5s free.

10 Eden Festival

Raehills Meadow, near Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, today to Sunday

A quirky and eclectic homespun alternative to the likes of T in the Park, it's also possibly the only place where you can catch the Happy Monday's Bez and day-glow TV fitness maven Mr Motivator on the same bill. With easygoing US hip hop legends De La Soul the weekend's main headliners, there's a rootsy, alternative look to a line-up unfolding across numerous stages, a dedicated theatre and a drive-in cinema. Tickets on the gate are £109 for the full weekend.
