Those seeking a blast from the past – the 13th century, to be exact – should think about heading down to Kelburn Estate in Ayrshire this weekend.
It’s a case of “the Vikings are coming!” during two days of family events today and tomorrow, including live battle re-enactments and a camp depicting Viking life complete with costumes and traditional crafts. All this will be provided by Glasgow Vikings, a re-enactment society that seeks to entertain as well as educate.
And there will also be plenty to explore for those who like their history a bit more local, including a cartoon exhibition and the estate’s museum, which both explore the story of Kelburn Castle and its inhabitants down the centuries.
The castle itself, which dates back to the 13th century, will be open for tours throughout the weekend. For those who’ve never been, it has a unique feature as far as historic homes are concerned – the walls are adorned with colourful graffiti. Now rated as one of the world’s top 10 pieces of street art, it really is a must-see.
The grounds are a big part of the draw, of course, especially for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The 3,500-acre estate, owned by the Viscount of Kelburn James Boyle, has a picturesque glen and waterfall, deep gorges, a monument and beautiful gardens to explore, all with the most spectacular views over the Firth of Clyde. The secret forest, with its woodland paths, raised walkways and surprises around every corner, is always a winner.
The estate has also introduced a number of new features this year, including an off-road mountain bike trail and a new Wild West-themed play area, complete with 20ft tower. Glamping has also come to Kelburn in the shape of family-sized bell tents which are available to hire.
Added to the existing attractions, which include horse riding, an indoor play barn, an adventure course and lots of animals to see, there’s something for visitors of all ages.
The Viking demonstrations run from 10am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
