What is it?

A TV box that combines Freeview, streaming and live Sky content while offering an alternative to contract-based subscriptions.

Sky has updated its NOW TV package allowing access to all Freeview's 60 channels in addition to the existing line-up to help grow its share in a crowded market.

Not stopping there, Sky has introduced three payment models for live viewing of the packages we know them best for: sport, movies and entertainment.

The box can be purchased without extras and pricing for the three bundles start at £10 when purchased with the box.

Good points?

The option to view live Sky content without being tied in for months or requiring a satellite dish is one many people will appreciate.

The hardware comes from Roku and provides a stable platform to view the impressive entertainment on offer. The remote is simple but effective and feels robust enough to withstand frequent use.

Bad points?

The software has been locked down, only permitting content allowed by Sky, which means no access to streaming services such as Netflix. The box is a cut-down version of Roku's own player with the external ports and slots disabled.

Best for ...

Families on a budget or those who only watch one-off events like the upcoming Open golf championship.

Avoid if ...

You are looking for the complete entertainment experience. Although it comes close, the NOW TV box still shuns Sky's competitors and is weaker for it.

Score: 8/10.
