Glasgow Warriors are interested in bringing the former Scotland captain Jason White back "home" to finish his top-flight career north of the border.
The Lions breakaway forward, once reputed to be the hardest tackler in the world, will be out of contract with Sale Sharks at the end of the season and it is believed that Sean Lineen, the head coach, is keen to see him return to his old club.
The coach is unwilling to discuss signing targets but he has ruled out the possibility of a move for the Lamont brothers, Sean and Rory, both of whom are also former Glasgow players, and he has rejected the suggestion that he hopes to lure the former Edinburgh centre Rob Dewey from Ulster, where he has been unable to command a regular place in the starting XV under Matt Williams.
Lineen said: "Like every team in the Magners League, we are preparing for next season. Naturally we are determined to bring high-quality talent to Glasgow, but we also must strive to get value for money."
With the departure of the Sale Sharks director, Philippe Saint-Andre, imminent, White is widely expected to be available. Sources at the Cheshire club have clearly indicated that the player is hoping to clinch a deal in Scotland.
White, currently sidelined after having surgery on a dislocated finger, launched his professional career with the now defunct Caledonian Reds before switching to Glasgow and then moving on to Sale in 2003.
He hopes to have returned to full fitness in time for the start of the 2009 RBS 6 Nations Championship.
He had the finger pinned after suffering the injury while turning in a man of the match performance for Sharks against London Wasps on Boxing Day.
He said: "I should be back in full training by Monday, January 26." That would give him a chance of featuring in the RBS 6 Nations, which begins for Scotland with the visit of Wales to Murrayfield on Sunday, February 8.
Last season, White, was injured in Scotland's defeat at Cardiff and then had to sit out the next match, away to Ireland.
n Matt Giteau, the Australia fly-half, has confirmed that he will remain with the Western Force in Super 14 for at least another year, turning down a reported multi-million dollar offer to play in France.
In early December, there was speculation that Giteau would not play with the Western Force in 2009, deciding instead to return to the ACT Brumbies in Canberra or move to French side Bayonne in a deal worth almost 10 million Australian dollars (£4.9m). However, the 26-year-old said in his Perth newspaper column that he would honor the final year of his contract with the Western Australia-based team.
"I can say now that I'm committed to the Force for next year and I won't be making a decision on my future until next season is over," Giteau wrote. "I never tried to get out of my contract legally because things get ugly when you start doing that and I didn't want to go there."
Giteau has played 65 tests for Australia, his first in 2002 against England. He has 409 test points, including 21 tries and 55 penalties.
