Asking Neil McCann to select his favourite Scottish Cup final memory is a bit like asking The Beatles to pick their favourite gig; where to start?
Asking Neil McCann to select his favourite Scottish Cup final memory is a bit like asking The Beatles to pick their favourite gig; where to start? There was his first one in 1998, when Hearts upset the odds to bring Walter Smith's first reign in charge to an end with a defeat. Then a year later, having moved to Ibrox, when Dick Advocaat began his tenure with a treble, defeating Celtic in the final.
One year on again, his third successive final, and Rangers completed the Dutch Double, comprehensively defeating an Aberdeen side hampered by an early injury to Jim Leighton. McCann and Rangers were back at Hampden in 2002, Peter Lovenkrands making the headlines for his late, late winner, from McCann's cross, to floor Celtic in an enthralling contest.
A year later McCann was playing his part again, supplying the free kick that allowed Lorenzo Amoruso to make a predictably sensational departure from Ibrox and leave Dundee to dream of what might have been.
McCann will be back at Hampden tomorrow in the twilight of an already eventful career, looking to spring one of the biggest surprises of the modern era by helping Falkirk to their first cup win since 1957 by beating Rangers.
He, understandably, finds it impossible to choose his favourite moment from the previous five, but hopes his sixth appearance in the end-of-season showcase ends up being just as memorable.
" I can't pick a favourite," he said. "Beating Celtic 3-2 in the last second of a Scottish Cup final, going back to the centre circle for the restart and the ref blowing the whistle was special, but it's like asking a parent to pick their favourite child. It's an absolute nightmare question, because I've had so many happy memories and I'm a very lucky man, to have been involved in so many great occasions.
"I've been quite fortunate to have played in five and won five, then I was at Hearts when they won the other one in 2006 but I was injured - that would have been my sixth.
"My record is pretty good and hopefully that experience helps. The kids hopefully know they can make a name for themselves. There's no point going out on the pitch and letting it pass you by. If you have a winners' medal, it's something you'll remember for the rest of your life. I won't be treating it as my last chance. If I do or don't win on Saturday, I'll be striving next year to get another medal."
Securing their SPL status against Inverness Caledonian Thistle last weekend has helped lift the tension that has enveloped Falkirk in recent months. "Last week's game was massive for the club's history, to stay in the SPL," McCann added. "It has made this week a lot more enjoyable. If we had lost at Inverness, it would have been difficult to lift the lads even for a cup final. There shouldn't be any pressure on us now, no worries about getting relegated or missing a cup final. It's just about playing in the showpiece."
