Scottish ministers have been forced to pay out an additional £500,000 to boost the Homecoming Scotland campaign, in a bid to raise awareness of the event.
The extra cash, allocated last month, represents a 40% increase in the previous marketing budget of £1.25m.
It follows concern expressed by VisitScotland, the national tourism agency, regarding the promotion of the event.
Timed to mark the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth, Homecoming 2009 is a £5m campaign aimed to encourage overseas Scots to come "home".
Ministers are planning more than 200 events to celebrate the occasion and hope to boost the nation's economy by millions of pounds.
