the Gardyne Theatre in Dundee has announced a strong folk and roots music programme for this autumn, starting on Thursday, August 28 with the new-look Blazin' Fiddles line-up. Treacherous Orchestra bassist Duncan Lyall and Halton Quartet (and Blazin' Fiddles) keyboards and accordion player Angus Lyon present their Celtic Connections commissions in a double bill of new music from the tradition on September 7. Perennial favourites Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham appear on September 11 followed by Herefordshire-born guitar picker to the Nashville country stars, Albert Lee & Hogan Heroes on September 20. UK folk scene legends Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick perform on October 4.

Isles festival this week

the Summer Isles Festival goes ahead in Achiltibuie, Ross and Cromarty, this week from Friday to Sunday. As well as musical attractions including indie rockers Hunter & the Bear, electronic music band Halcyon, harpist Rachel Newton, pictured, folk band Rura, and Mairearad Green's ceilidh band there will be workshops, four screenings of Neville Gabie's new film AFLOAT, food demonstrations, a special festival ale brewed by An Tealleach Ale Company in Little Loch Broom, and a silent auction.

Fingerpicking sounds good

BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominee Sunjay plays two dates in Scotland to mark the release of his self-titled new album in September. The Derby-born singer-songwriter-guitarist, whose fingerpicking style has been likened to American bluesman Chris Smither and Ralph McTell, appears at Glenfarg Folk Club on Monday, September 15 and Irvine Folk Club on Wednesday 17.

The Last Big Weekend

Two day music festival The Last Big Weekend is one of the final shows of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. Presented by Chemikal Underground as part of the East End Social it will run on August 30 and 31 in Richmond Park in Glasgow. From April 2014 the East End Social has been staging music events, live performances and community initiatives within Glasgow's east end featuring internationally known and local upcoming artists. Mogwai headline a bill on Saturday which also includes The Wedding Present, The Twilight Sad, and Young Fathers. On Sunday Optimo and Numbers present a day of dance which includes Hudson Mohawke, Jeff Mills, and James Murphy.
