Platform's singular contribution to this year's Glasgow Jazz Festival was something of a singular event in itself. Basically a homecoming gig by saxophonist Tully and his long-established quintet from the badlands of the border between England and Wales, it was built around a suite of the music he wrote 30 years ago for Scotland's favourite film about itself, Gregory's Girl. That made up the bulk of the second half of the concert, accompanied by images from the movie, but the clever folk at Platform had also commissioned artist and playwright Brian Miller to assemble a small exhibition about Cumbernauld, the setting of the film, and found a contemporary film about the making of the new town to show as well. To its credit, this was less an exercise in musical nostalgia than an entire social history module.
