On the splendid blues singer- philosopher-poet Otis Taylor's Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs album there's a track, Maybe Yeah, that's driven by a repetitive, marching band-like snare-drum figure played by Nasheet Waits.

I thought of this as Marcin Masecki's drummer attempted a similar snare and bass drum tattoo and wished I could have accessed Taylor's song instead. Because whereas Waits's feel, groove and propulsion in themselves make Maybe Yeah compulsive, what we were hearing here was an idea that had long since passed into tedium.
