With almost every seat in the auditorium filled and more than 30 musicians on stage, the first night of this year's short tour by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland spoke eloquently for the future of a 20-year-old initiative, even before a note was blown.

The piano (shared by two young players) divided a 20-piece orchestra conducted by guest Rick Taylor from a 12-piece ensemble led by NYJoS co-directors Andrew Bain and Malcolm Edmonstone with two distinct books, except when the entire collective came together with funky enthusiasm at start and finish.
