Ten acts to hear at Tectonics 2015
Eliane Radigue. Born in Paris in 1932; visionary composer of concrete and synthesiser music whose exquisitely-crafted music is slow, graceful and monumental. We'll be hearing her recent acoustic music, mainly from her OCCAM OCEAN series.
Ben Patterson. American jazz artist, painter, sculptor and founding member of the radical 1960s Fluxus movement, Patterson provides the veteran avant-garde presence that Christian Wolff and Alvin Lucier brought to previous Tectonics.
Peter Brötzmann. The German sax legend blows fast and furious free jazz; it's visceral, ballsy, uncompromising and thrilling. Last time I heard him was at an unforgettable Counterflows gig at the Glad Cafe in 2013 where he cut between bristly, grizzly growls and the sweetest lyricism. At Tectonics plays a solo set on opening night and a duo with Heather Leigh.
Goodiepal. Faroese/Danish composer, performer, theorist, lecturer, media-hacker and general trouble-maker Parl Kristian Bjørn Vester - alias Goodiepal - sets up a 'classroom' in the Recital Room throughout the weekend. What he'll get up to in there has been left enigmatic; expect edifying stuff relating to electronic music, computer technology and the reaches of cultural theory.
Christopher Fox. Loyal followers of Tectonics will remember Fox from last year's festival, when his mesmerising vocal work Preluding was a highlight of the Exaudi concert. Composer, teacher and cultural commentator, this year he's back with a new piece called Topophony for orchestra and improvised harp.
Heather Leigh. The Texas-born, Glasgow-based pedal-steel guitar maverick is one half of the improv duo Jailbreak with drummer Chris Corsano and co-manager of Finnieston's Volcanic Tongue record shop. She appears at Tectonics in duo with Peter Brötzmann.
Hild Sofie Tafjord. Norwegian french horn player who specialises in noise, electronica and improvised music - think drones, wails and plenty of spacial acoustic tricks. She creates a site-specific work for the foyer and the Old Fruitmarket, performed by amateur brass players and members of the BBCSSO.
Mariam Rezaei. The Newcastle-based turntablist/founder of the NOISESTRA opens the weekend with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and the BBCSSO. She also performs a late slot on Saturday with Hungarian black-metal vocalist Attila Csihar.
Rhodri Davies. Welsh improvising harpist/sound installation artist; plays with Ben Patterson, in various Eliane Radigue works and in Christopher Fox's Topophony with the BBCSSO.
Daniel Padden. Founder of the Edinburgh-based The One Ensemble whose music is a seriously beguiling mash-up of Eastern European folk, free jazz, psychedelia and all sorts. He closes Tectonics 2015 with a new work called Glass Hundreds, specially written for the Old Fruitmarket.
